It is important to understand that the foot in these pictures is view from inside.

This open basket technique is used for prevent ankle injuries. You can use this taping technique on athletes that have weak ankles or athletes that are comming out of an ankle injuries. I personally believe that prevention of an injuries is always the first thought of a good coach. Never let your players play if they are injured.

The maleolus is the bony pretuberance in the middle of your ankle.

Open Basket technique, figure 1

First, wrap the ankle with a pre-rap tape. It the athlete is confortable and you do not have a pre-rap, you can shave the athlete ankle. Personally, I prefer shaving my ankle before taping them because the tape is more stable on the ankle.

Open Basket technique, figure 2

After the pre-rap, the trainer has to perform one or two anchor at about 10 cm. from the maleolus bone. If you angle a little bit the anchors (start up, go aroud down, and go back up), the tape will go up easy and it will not wrinkle.

Next, apply the tape on the anchor starting in the inside of the ankle. Pull down, and aim to pass with the tape over the middle of the maleoulus.

Open Basket technique, figure 4

Pass the tape under the foot plant and come up passing over the middle of the maleoulus, again. Normally, the injury is in the external side of the ankle, so when you pull up, pull together the injured part. Also, tell the athlete to keep the ankle everted (push the ankle outside).

At this point, anchor the tape in the same way you did it on picture 2.

Open Basket technique, figure 6

Perform step 4 again, but this time go down and tape over the middle left side of the maleoulus. Come up to the outside in the same way.

Open Basket technique, figure 7

Anchor again a little bit under the other anchors. In other words, when you anchor, go down toward the foot half a tape all the time.

Open Basket technique, figure 8

Perform step 4 again, but this time go down and tape over the middle right side of the maleoulus. Come up to the outside in the same way.

Open Basket technique, figure 9

Anchor again a little bit under the other anchors. After secure the tape, perform the heel-lock with the tape as it is explained in the previous page. (see Heel-lock technique). When you done with this, close all the holes. All the parts that are open (where the skin is visible) should be closed. It is important to know that this technique can be performed with perfection after a lot of hour of practice. If you never did this before, try to do this to your players in practice, and ask them if they had problems such as pain or pinching skin, and so on. Try to improve yourself by adjusting to these problem.
